<descript>
This GIS grid atlas contains precipitation frequency estimates for the Pacific Islands that are based on precipitation data. This atlas is a new release from the NWS and does not update any other publication. The precipitation frequency grids are available for durations from 5 minutes through 60 days, and for average recurrence intervals of 1 year through 1,000 years. AMS and PDS results are provided; refer to published documentation for differences between the two.
<purpose>Precipitation frequency estimates are used as basic design criteria for a wide variety of hydraulic structures such as culverts, roadway drainages, bridges and small dams. This dataset is for the display and/or analyses of spatially distributed point precipitation frequency estimates.</purpose>

<procstep>
<procdesc>This spatial data set was prepared by spatially interpolating point precipitation frequency estimates. The precipitation frequency estimates were calculated using regional L-moment frequency approach based on an annual maximum series data. Annual maximum series bases estimates were converted to partial duration based frequency estimates. The spatial interpolation of the point precipitation frequency estimates was accomplished by first interpolating 1-day MAMs. The 1-day MAM grids were used to derive MAM grids for other durations using relationships in MAM ratios across durations. The MAM grids were then used to derive grids of precipitation frequency estimates by rescaling with corresponding regional growth factors for each recurrence interval and duration. For more details about the processes used to create this grid, please see the NOAA Atlas 14 Volume 5 documentation.</procdesc>
